Zebra crossing? Or maybe not?
As we were driving down the gravelled road towards the large watering hole at the Addo National Park, (near Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape of South Africa), we were stopped by this beautiful animal, who refused to budge from his position. He stood there, for almost close to 15 minutes, I’d say. As we were not in any major hurry, we sat quietly, lapping up this rare opportunity to see a Zebra from such close quarters. What a beauty, he was! And those eyes, they were so gentle and almost ready to speak to us!
After a while, he moved and went to the other side of the road, away from the car. This time, when he turned around, we noticed a large gaping wound, probably as a result of one of the big cats attacking him and tearing off a large chunk of flesh that was still hurting and yet to heal. Perhaps he was in pain, and that’s what he was trying to tell us! As visitors, all we could do was quietly pass by, making way for the other cars behind us, sending out silent prayers for his speedy recovery and his relief from pain.
We left with a heavy heart, hoping his wound would heal in time and he would quickly recover, happily joining his herd by the watering hole.
