Wordless Wednesday 90
A game we played so often during our growing-up years! So much fun, and so much time spent in the outdoors, despite rain or shine. Something that was so taken for granted that our parents could never have foreseen what a rarity it would turn into by the time we turned into parents ourselves.
Did you know that Tic-Tac-Toe has been around for almost 3000 years? It was so much fun stepping out with friends, and just enjoying oneself. Who’d ever pondered on what the games we played taught us? I wonder how many of us knew that this game, for instance, actually taught us predictability and problem-solving. Honestly, had someone ever mentioned that at the time, we’d probably have laughed it off. With outdoor play almost on the verge of disappearing, and children spending more time sitting in front of computers and the TV, I’m told tic-tac-toe is now a game that they play on their consoles to experience spatial reasoning, hand-eye coordination, and strategizing. Could we have ever imagined that?
In the light of this, it is quite an irony that I came upon this photo which I’m sharing with you today. Here’s the backstory—a couple of years ago, we went on a holiday to a lovely resort in Bekal, in North Kerala. It was a break from the routine that took us there. We were happy to switch off into a gadget-free mode of life that saw us doing outdoorsy stuff (read exploring around, spending time amidst Nature) savouring uninterrupted reading time, not forgetting the long walks we took at dusk to catch the glorious evening sky in myriad colours. One such evening, we spotted two little boys at a distance playing on the sand, drawing stick figures, their faces writ with glee. Seeing them, our 8-year-old suggested we play tic-tac-toe. Normally, I wouldn’t. But this time, I jumped in, without a second thought. Totally impromptu! Yes, the knees did hurt a bit, given that I had an injury a couple of months back, but the fun was unbeatable!
In a world where you’re meant to opt for one of the two types, I’d rather be gadget-free than a gadget-freak any day and enjoy a real game which gets my hand and feet dirty. A little sweaty perhaps, but, assuredly, a happy heart!
