Wordless Wednesday – 23

This post is not going to be wordless, though, because I’d like to give the background about the two photos.

Came across this beautiful sculpture at the entrance of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum, a premier art and history museum located in Mumbai.

p1080741
The first image depicts the serene, reassuring Buddha as he exists in a world of constant turmoil. The second image is much more than what you see at first glance. It depicts the sleeping Buddha with fifteen hundred meditating Buddhas on the other side. The sleeping Buddha here is Akshobhaya, in Bhumisparsha mudra, touching Mother Earth with his right hand, asking her to be witness to his magical moment of enlightenment.

The connotation of the two sides is to the Buddha who exists in a macro and a micro level. Isn’t this amazing? What do you think of it? Have you come across this before?

It’s a gorgeous sculpture. It was put up at the India Habitat Center in New Delhi where I viewed it and was totally stunned to see it. It’s a fantastic piece for sure.

Thank you Parul. Please do so. It is located in Colaba, very central and very easy to find. The collection of artefacts in the museum is definitely one of India’s best. 🙂
